O, you who have come to visit

O you who have come to visit
with the elders and to see me talk and walk
and play, and to see what inner charm and grace
I may have – listen,
for my world is a small world;
but the personal space is infinite for me
for when I play the vina
the music transcends time and thought;
still, the physical world I know
is the small world of town and family
for all my life
the world I’ve known is the place
of my birth, the cloistered space of my home and
the world of my parents, my aunts and sisters and the brothers ;
O, you who have come with the elders
to visit my home
and to see me play,
will you marry such a one
and love me then always?
I was taught at home and so the world I’ve met is not wide
but the skills I know
will keep a loving home for him and those who come of us;
of all delights of the home that comes of woman I can provide -
though that always flowers and thrives in the company of the male who
lives the life of responsibility, duty and love;
O, you who have come with the elders
to visit my home
and to see me play,
will you marry such a one
and love me then always?
What I may know not
I will learn if you will teach me patiently to share and enjoy;
and to expand my world
I will follow if you know your way;
and when the day is done
I have a world too that I can share
and that is the world of the music of the vina that
can bring in the home a world unimagined, beyond common grasp
and that reaches within the deepest depths of the mind:
that too I bring,
O, you who have come with the elders
to visit my home
and to see me play,
will you marry such a one
and love me then always?
