we are such clowns

we are such clowns who build empires
for the hungry jaws
of inevitable destruction;
time allows each dog its day
and each mistakes the day for eternity;
come silly folks and nations,
and friends, dear, dear friends,
laugh at yourselves;
we are clowns
who build everything
and give it all
to drugged inheritors who love their booze
but don’t care about your establishments;
we are clowns
who put in so much effort and
who exert ourselves to no end
and time sniggers all the while
in the background;

we are clowns the past watches
the present wastes
and the future devours;
we are clowns
who build systems and edifices
on lies and illusions
and on what our poets and prophets
in their cunning delusions
spoon out to us;
and dear, dear sad clowns – see,
life rolls up its gargantuan carpet of time
frayed, dusty,
and infested with rats and mites and time rolls up the carpet
with us too, O noble clowns, all rolled in it
and dumps it in the incinerators in the belly of death;
witless folks,
at least laugh at yourselves
for we are such clowns…
we are such clowns
