you think you know somebody

you think you know somebody;
they joke with you, they laugh
and you are friends
and then you joke and laugh –
and then they snap, and show displeasure
though it’s the same measure of joke and manner you might use
(at least that’s what you think, in your world)
but there is a subtlety, in their minds, that escapes you
and they are displeased:
My joke is not the same as yours;
Your humor is not as subtle as mine…
you think you know the person
but you find you do not;
but they know themselves
and they know you and your intent
better than you know either…
go carefully then; it’s such a slippery world…
it may be better, you think sometimes,
to walk with the face of a stone and an unpredictable heart…
…for consistency is easily hurt; unpredictability is feared…
you think you know somebody
