you think you know somebody
text © Raj Arumugam, January 2008

you think you know somebody;
they joke with you, they laugh
and you are friends
and then you joke and laugh –
and then they snap, and show displeasure
though it’s the same measure of joke and manner you might use
(at least that’s what you think, in your world)
but there is a subtlety, in their minds, that escapes you
and they are displeased:
My joke is not the same as yours;
Your humor is not as subtle as mine…
you think you know the person
but you find you do not;
but they know themselves
and they know you and your intent
better than you know either…
go carefully then; it’s such a slippery world…
it may be better, you think sometimes,
to walk with the face of a stone and an unpredictable heart…
…for consistency is easily hurt; unpredictability is feared…
you think you know somebody

nothing personal, Kala - as a writer, like all of us, I try and offer an insight into the human condition; I try and resolve my own personal issues through discussion or 'negative-mind-clearing' practices...
I like your last sentence...has a ceratin alluring complexity in it...

madhuri - exactly my way too...I offer something positive once, twice - and then perhaps just move away too...
Freedom from the past, and past events is also soemthing important to me: so that every meeting even with a person I already know is always new...

Thanks for the nice title, but you can just call me Raj if you like.
The poem -as all my blogs, I hope - is meant to offer an insight into human behavior and the human condition; I hope this blog does not offer a ceratin negatvity; relaism is good.
Will visit your site soon.

This was a really astute observation...Liked it a lot!!...I get iritated sometimes with so many unnecessary undercurrents in simple conversations :( ... My way to avoid unnecessary argument is to be insensitive to hidden barbs, and step away when its no longer worth the time :)

Shri Raj,
Very nice message. Really we don't know whom we know. In every relationhsip certain amount of gap and uncertainity exiists.
I liked it...... We should be alert and careful always.

Mr. Arumugam,
Nice poetic prose! Simple, yet profound words...You really don't know anybody:)
From Jesus to Julius Ceasar...you name it..."betrayal" of so those "we think we know"..teach us- that relationships are quite superficial and one has to be realistic of their expectations...sometimes those we think dislike us/even those we see as enemies, may turn out to be better!
best,
Maria
