Sekhar and Indu in love: painting by Ravi Varma
text © Raj Arumugam, March 2008; painting: Arjuna and Subhadra by Ravi Varma
O do not go, Indu,
for my eyes have barely their
fill of your beauty
and my heart still but little of your love;
always it can never be complete
it can never be enough;
O sweet daughter of nature –
never enough of seeing your beauty
never enough of your love
is not my love, Sekhar,
is not all my love
enough to fill that heart
of yours?
your love is perfect, Indu;
your love is perfect;
but there is immeasurable space in my being
space not finite
so that all the love you give is still not enough
never enough
you say such sweet words, Sekhar,
such words all men in love say;
sure these words of ceaseless love
have won my heart, have won my soul
but my reason warns me too:
that when your will is done
and the days go in routine
you will tire and you will sing:
love is enough, love is enough
I have other aspirations in my being
O love is never enough, Indu,
love is never enough -
ignore the loveless poets
who put on prophetic airs;
listen to my heart as it sings
listen to my soul as it speaks:
between us Love is never enough
for I can never be full, away from you;
my days and nights are but for Indu
and all my thoughts ceaseless waves
reaching out for Indu
so let hapless poets sing
of sufficient love
but mine, Indu,
mine is ceaseless love,
endless love
for I can never get enough of your love

Dear Raj
I enjoyed this poem of yours.
In the normal course, poets exaggerate the love that develop between individuals. You have made this poem look like through the following verses that poets are loveless. That expresses how strong you are in explaining the love that Shekar holds for his love.
ignore the loveless poet
who put on prophetic airs;
Truly wonderful! I have read several poems of yours. They hold a unique style. I am emerging out to be a fan of your writings.

Lil Pam:
(just as you have written 'love is never enough') hehe...

You say
poets always exaggerate the feelings, emotions and sentiments, more so in the case of 'love'
Just a few ideas about exaggeration. It must be within limits, isn't it? There must be a certain logic to it.
If the exaggeration gets out of hand, then we end up with a bad poem, with weak sentimentalism and meoldrama...

Hi Lil Pad - you have such an eye for details and that's great for that's all part of the creative mind, whether poet or artist.
* Why do I say loveless poets/hapless poets?
The poem, beside being about love, is also a game between me and Sekhar.
Two secrets of a youthful mind, Lil Pam, is to be able to laugh at oneself and to play.
This poem is laughing at myself and also a game between me and Sekhar.
First, it is a reply to Sekhar's idea that Love is never enough - and what a wonderful game it is, to be able to find another painting by Ravi Varma, to be able to write a credible poem on the theme suggested by Sekhar - and to find a picture where the male looks a bit like Sekhar! (well, of what I've seen of Sekhar in his pictures at Sulekha!). It's a game where I throw poor Sekahr into his own idea!
It's also a game where I make fun of myself, where I laugh at myself.
So Sekhar, in this imaginary situation and in wooing Indu, hits out at the idea that love is enough by saying that such things are only said by loveless poets (poor me!) and hapless poets (poor me!). See the game!?
It's fun.
If, as you say, I've exaggeratted the feelings, emotions and sentiments, more so in the case of 'love'
It only seems complicated and elaborate because we are analysing it.
P.S.
I sent a copy of the poem to Sekhar and got his permission to publish. I've never met him and know him only at Sulekha but he's become like a brother to me as he's always been so marvelous as a person. He is also a master of the short poem, having modelled himself on his favorite Telegu poet Sri Sri. I think all you have to do is mention Sri Sri, and Segar'll do anything you ask!
This poem came as a spontaneous reply to Sekhar's comment.
