Sekhar and Indu in love: painting by Ravi Varma
text © Raj Arumugam, March 2008; painting: Arjuna and Subhadra by Ravi Varma
O do not go, Indu,
for my eyes have barely their
fill of your beauty
and my heart still but little of your love;
always it can never be complete
it can never be enough;
O sweet daughter of nature –
never enough of seeing your beauty
never enough of your love
is not my love, Sekhar,
is not all my love
enough to fill that heart
of yours?
your love is perfect, Indu;
your love is perfect;
but there is immeasurable space in my being
space not finite
so that all the love you give is still not enough
never enough
you say such sweet words, Sekhar,
such words all men in love say;
sure these words of ceaseless love
have won my heart, have won my soul
but my reason warns me too:
that when your will is done
and the days go in routine
you will tire and you will sing:
love is enough, love is enough
I have other aspirations in my being
O love is never enough, Indu,
love is never enough -
ignore the loveless poets
who put on prophetic airs;
listen to my heart as it sings
listen to my soul as it speaks:
between us Love is never enough
for I can never be full, away from you;
my days and nights are but for Indu
and all my thoughts ceaseless waves
reaching out for Indu
so let hapless poets sing
of sufficient love
but mine, Indu,
mine is ceaseless love,
endless love
for I can never get enough of your love

Indeed, mathekail - and that was Sekhar's intention in that spontaneous interjection and quote that our good friend Sekhar threw at me!
Indeed, in his classic style, he felt I scould shorten this poem! I'm sure you've raed his poems that are truly short and yet evocative.

It is so soothing to read your lines on 'Love is never enough'. Beautiful picture and romantic lines, Raj. Liked it very much.
(just as you have written 'love is never enough') hehe...
By the way, I am wondering why do you say 'loveless poets' & 'hapless poets', for poets always exaggerate the feelings, emotions and sentiments, more so in the case of 'love'
