Actually dogs often feel insecured in the company of little children because the child loves to play with the dog and unknowingly may hurt while playing.
Dogs in turn scare children mostly when they have no accompanying adult. A doctor had said this once!

      I would show the child the scars I bear from various dog bites, advise the child to never touch the sleeping dog, which nearly took out my eye, and I then I would also ask the dog's owner: where is the leash?     -- GF
